THE PROJECT AREA & PEOPLE:
GRAMINA BIKAS SANGATHAN (GBS) started functioning with a couple of Gram panchayats of Pallahada Block. The focused of Banspal Block of Keonjhar District have a tribal block of the district. GRAMINA BIKAS SANGATHAN (GBS) was working in 14 villages of 2 Gram Panchayats. These villages are surrounded by hills and forest and inhabited by the tribal communities like Juang, Munda, Bhuyan and Dalit and Marginal farmers.
While paddy is the only crop of the area, the land distribution is highly uneven having large farmers who consist only 4% of the population own 39% of the cultivable land and the rest 61% of lands full of forest and hills is shared by 96% of the population, which is a major case for the tribal people for their sufferings in poverty, ill health and substandard life. Report reveals, Keonjhar district is highest Malaria affected province in the Asian continent.
Rampart illiteracy, ignorance, lack of awareness among the people becomes the strong impediments for the success of different government programmes. In view of the above situation the only way out is a strong and planned people’s participatory NGO intervention with multiple development programmes.
In this context GRAMINA BIKAS SANGATHAN (GBS) has come forward to complement the Govt.’s development by implementing need based participatory people’s development programmes in the prime sectors like education, health, vocational training, agriculture and integrated community development.
